WHAT HAPPENS AT A PLACEMENT AUDITION?

All students are asked to:

1. Play a prepared solo of their choice that demonstrates technique and can be performed confidently. Memorization and accompanist not required.

2. Sight-read an assigned selection. The student will be given one minute to review.

3. Scales.

Grand String Orchestra welcomes violin, viola, cello and double bass players from near-beginner to intermediate level. The emphasis is on having fun and learning classical and popular music together in an informal and non-competitive atmosphere. While the group will focus on ensemble skills and on developing general musical and string skills in an ensemble setting, it is also an opportunity to meet other string players and make great music together. Auditions are not required to participate in the Grand String Orchestra.

A preparatory string ensemble for intermediate students with moderate ensemble experience.

An advanced symphonic orchestra, complete with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, playing challenging works from classical, musical and film scores.

An advanced entry-level string orchestra introducing beginners to the elements of teamwork and ensemble performance.

St. Cecilia Music Center's annual Concerto Competition will take place the morning of December 7, 2024.

Contestants must:

• be in grades 6-12.
• not be a previous winner.
• have the composition memorized.
• provide their own second piano accompanist for the competition.
• register by 5:00pm Friday, November 1, 2024.

Applicants must be prepared to play the following concerto by memory at the competition:

Auditions are closed. Parents/Teachers will not be permitted in the audition room with the exception of a parent or teacher accompanying the student. Tape recorders are prohibited in the audition room and adjoining areas.

The competition winner will perform with the SCMC Philharmonic in concert the evening of Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 7:30pm.
